Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1967 and the proud father of three sons.
In 1990 I started my career at sea as second Officer on general cargo, Ro-Ro and bulk carrier vessels. I quickly became Chief Officer on VLCCs and LPGs and when the opportunity arose to become Harbour Pilot, I did not hesitate.
Currently, I serve as a Harbour Pilot in largest port in Portugal,Sines which handles more than 50% of the country’s cargo, where I perform duties as Senior Pilot manoeuvering all types of vessels without restrictions. I’m also a member of the port’s task force on sustainability, alternative fuels and energy transition.
Since 2004 I’ve been attending all EMPA General Meetings, and IMPA Congress since 2006.
Since September 2013, besides being a Pilot I’m also a Lecturer at the Portuguese Nautical Academy, teaching Port and Maritime Technology, Maritime Safety and Stowage Systems at the MSc and BSc degrees, a consultant in technical and safety matters and internal auditor on ISO 9001, 14001 and OSHAS 18001.
In 2006 I was elect Vice President of APIBARRA. In 2015, I was elected as Vice-President at the European Maritime Pilots’ Association (EMPA). In the same year, I was elected as President of the Portuguese Marine Pilots’ Association (APIBARRA). During the last nine years, I had the privilege to serve EMPA as Senior Vice-President and in 2017 I became Chairman of the Training and Technical Committee.
